i've got an 86 f150. the four wheel drive went out. With all your guys help i diagnosed the problem. the hubs are bad. I understand the hubs are some sort of cetifugal locking hubs, auto. I can get new hubs from autozone for 100 bucks but i'd idealy like the original auto hubs. Where can i find these, or what do i need to do to convert the auto to man hubs.
are the manual hubs that much better, everyone tells me to just get the manual ones.
The auto hubs are nice because you never need to think ahead if you will need 4 wheel drive. They are also nice since you don't have to get out of the truck.
The bad things about them are that they are weak and much more prone to breaking than the manuals. Also, every time you shift into 4 while you are moving the entire front drivetrain must come up to speed which wears the hubs.
Manual hubs are nice because they are damn near bulletproof. You don't have to worry about them breaking at the worst possible time. I went with manuals for the reliability.
The downside of manual hubs are that they require thought. If you want to use 4 wheel drive you must lock the hubs in.
I've found that when I think I might need 4 I simply lock the hubs in. Around town the fuel mileage is not that much different in the winter with the hubs locked rather than unlocked. The conversion isn't that bad.
If I were you, I would pick up a set of warn lockers and be done with it.
ok, what do i do to convert from the auto to man.
Auto zone has the hubs for 100, and can order the conversion kit for 40, whats in the kit, do i need it.
The kit comes with the new spindle nuts and the locking ring. You do need the kit as well as the hubs and that should be about it. When you do the conversion it would be a fine time to re-pack your wheel bearings.
is that easy enough to do and worth the extra 40 bucks and having to get out to get into 4 wheel?
Ideally i guess i'd like it to be back to factory specs, you know just back to normal, where can i find the auto hubs.
i don't have to change anything inside the pumpkin or in the axle tubes?
if so i guess a buck forty is pretty good.
It is well worth having to get out and lock the hubs considering that the manuals are reliable unlike the autos. If I think I will need 4 wheel drive I simply lock them in before I go. The only time I really lock them in is if I will be off-road or if it is snowing pretty hard.
A set of new auto hubs if you can find them are anywhere from $2-300 dollars each IIRC.
If you decided to convert from auto hubs to manual hubs it is like packing your wheel bearings. Piece of cake.
A quick look on e-bay shows a few places with a buy-it-now on the Warn #9790 hubs for $60 and the conversion kit for $34.99. Pretty darn good deal in my book.
