On my custom built computer I have a problem. i turned it on today and it came up with something about a failure and to insert the startup disk. I didnt know what that meant so I restarted the computer and now it wont come on, all it does is blow the fans for like 2 seconds then go back off, and the green back light on the on/off button will stay on.. I took it to geek squad and they wouldnt tell me anything without pay $59.00 to just tell me what the problem with it is. I dont want to spend all that and it be something simple. I have replaced the internal battery in it. It all started after I installed a new fan in it. I went and took the new one out and put the old one in and still nothing. It did have a bit of dust built on the processer im about to go clean it off, and hope that is the problem. Anyone with computer experience have any suggestions or comments? Thanks for everybodys help in advance!
i had this problem like 2 weeks ago. here is what i did. disconnected everything including power chord
press and hhold power for 15 seconds
attach power chord only
power up
should not go long
remove power chord
remove memory
press and hold power
reinstall memory
and reconnect everything
power up and repeated press f12
this will alow you to run hd diagnosis
after there is no conflict shown
reboot and you will be fine
ok I figured out the problem, it was the 3.5 floppy disk. Who uses these anymore? It was the last thing i unplugged, i went from undoing the sound then the video, and all the other stuff till I got to the floppy then it turned on for me
ok well the problem of it not coming on is fixed but now it will only stay on like 2 or 3 minutes then the whole computer shuts down. Any ideas?
That could be a heat issue.. The easiest way to determine is to open the case and use a portable house fan blowing into it.. If it runs without problems then it is either dust build up in the power supply or around the CPU heat sink (metal fins)..
When you replaced the fan was it the CPU fan? If it was did you remove the heat sink? If you did then you will probably need to add some heat transfer grease between the cpu and heat sink to get good heat transfer.
i installed a fan on the side cover, i did remove that item in it that has a fan on it i think it is the heat sink it has metel fins and a fan over it... and clean it off, there was some brown stuff on the botton of it..i took it off to be able to access it to get the built up dust.

You mean you scraped off the goo at the bottom of (Under) the metal fins?
If you did then you need to get some heat transfer grease and reapply it..
This helps take the heat from the CPU and keep it cool..
Also make sure there is no dust or gunk in between the metal fins and that the fan is working..
