Computer locking up???

This started yesterday. It was on for around an hour and then I couldn't go to a different web page. Today it took about 1.5 hours. I had task manager up and it only showed netscape and my file manager program. First the file program showed not responding. I tried to end task and nothing happened. Then netscape was not responding. I can't even turn the computer off the normal way. I have to hold the power button.

I ran a virus check and nothing was found. When I turn it on later, it boots up fine. It almost looks like a heat related problem. Any ideas? Thanks

I tried a system restore to a few days ago. It came back with "no changes have been made since that date".

Download SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard...it sounds like your browser has been hijacked. It could be a hardware issue, but not knowing a lot about what you're running....

Symptoms similar to that happened to me when I got the Xupiter hijacker a couple years ago. I could't even run my virus scan updater, my system restore wouldn't restore, I couldn't surf anywhere.

You can get spyware guard and blasters at www.download.com. or go directly to http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ and ger version 3.1 .

Check this site out and choose your own spyware remover. The ones above aren't even tested there, but I use em and love em. Just update frequently. http://www.adwarereport.com/mt/archives/000004.html

It could well be a temp problem.
I just checked the average temp in you neck of the wood's ... damm hot !!
I assume you followed FordLover's advice and you don't have a virus.

System Restore will not "wipe" a virus either, so forget that .

Make sure your box has a good airflow, they do generate a lot of heat , add a heat wave , and you got problems !

Check the BIOS and see what the temp is there ....

Dont think that takin the covers off will make it run cooler , it will make it run hotter , D'oh !!

You may need an extra fan in there ...

Or move to Ireland , it's a lot cooler over here !!!

Try turn your computer on and do "nothin" with it , how long does it run for before a problem occurs.
try run it "hard" for a bit , run a DVD on it , or somethin and see what happens...

For this kind of thing you got to be a bit of a detective !

Not every problem is a Virus !!!!

There are may variables , did you build the box yourself?
What's the spec on the box ?

Etc , etc ...
Good luck dude

It's a PC Club "E Power". 1.8 ghz celeron. I just checked all three fans. They are running. I can move the mouse when it happens. I just can't close any program. I run spybot. I'll check the temp as soon as I remember how to do it.

I had it on for about 45 min this afternoon and it didn't do it.

I'd bet your haveing memory problems. Not an error, but just too little memory.
You get "Thrashing" in the Memory pages, just as you would in a Disk drive.

Then you get Page faults and several others. Wiered lockups, and sometimes, if you wait long enough, the function (thats locking up the executive) will time out and you can start the interupts again.
When that happens, you can see the flickering that represents all the keypunching you did when the damn thing was locked up.

Ewwww, running a celeron at that speed. They are pressure cookers for sure. Just pop a turkey in the case for a few hours and she will be cooked good. lol Might want to check the temp, and upgrade yuor heatsink/fan and case fans. Usually the ones that come with the case are garbage. Good luck.

A year?

My PC (a HP 6300, drat the luck) is almost seven years old now.
It never had memory problems, that I can remember until two years ago.
There may be a worm doing this.
But on my PC, I just use the Restore disk, and the problem goes away until I get some crap off the Net that gobbles up my memory.

When you boot, there's a Logic term that shoots through all the Memory chips in the system to Reset all the memory to Blank! (not the Eroms)
That happens everytime. You cant stop it from happening.

But if there's somthing on your hard drive that jumps into memory at the end of POST, you'll have the same problem every time you Power up.
Until you clean (initialize) the hard drive and get rid of the problem.
I got my memory virus from going to one of those Adult sites.

I think good Computer Geeks have hit the bottom of the Barrell when they go to work for the **** sites. But talented they are, and malicious too.
They probably exist in other vocations too, and I'm sure there's guys out there that can write Links to bad stuff and embed that in some business' software. These guys and Tool thieves could cause me to commit a violent act on their persons. This act would inflict unbearable pain that would last for weeks until they finally expired.

If you had more memory, I think the problem would dissappear for awhile. Maybe forever, depending on what the Problem is.

I've often wished someone would write a Memory Read program, that would help you find a flock of "F"'s written into memory. We could do that with the 8080 chip and Dos programming.

I'm Guessing that's the way your memory get's full. Something writes "F"'s througout some pages, or randomly in your Memory Plane.

This Illegal program holds that memory active, so it cant be used by anything else. That effectivley holds the size of your memory plane down. And probably reduces it further as time and activity goes by.

You've probably seen enough of my logic for one Sunday morning. I'm going fishing!
