IIRC the MANUAL trans starter is longer in the nose-can be used in an AUTOMATIC application with just one simple hardware store flat washer between the starter and the mounting plate.
HOWEVER: the AUTOMATIC trans starter is SHORTER in the nose and bolting it to a MANUAL trans setup it will not quite grab the teeth in the flywheel.
E1TZ-11002-A .. Starter ~ Manual Transmission ~ Fits: The same models as above. (E1TZ-11002-A replaced D4TZ-11002-D, which replaced C5TZ-11002-D) Ford loves updating part numbers.

I'm sure thats reversed. the auto starter has a longer nose cone and will grind against the flywheel when you crank the engine.
I've encountered this problem a couple times. The automatic starter drive gear projects too far (since the snout is shorter). Just head down to your local auto electrical rebuilders and buy the correct snout. It was only $13 eight years ago for the old style (non-reduction gear) starter.
Or get a core starter at a junkyard.
Spacing the starter out with washers is a bit crude and will allow dirt to get in, may cause bad grounding, misalignment etc.
