Starter interchange?
Hi there,
I have a 1975 F-600 with a 361 FT Engine and a 285 Clark manual transmission. This weekend in Syracuse NY my starter was acting up and I had to bump start it.
I have a 1974 F-100 with a 360 and and a C-6 auto. parts truck about 1 hour away with a new starter on it.
Before I drive out and remove it, can someone tell me if they are the same starter? I have tried a few auto part places but the do not have listings for a f-600 truck. only up to an F-500 and it does not show a 361 engine.
Any help would be great! Thanks.

Same starter, different Bendix gear. I think.
If it mounts from the front, the same way as the FE does, it's the same starter.
It MIGHT have a different pitch gear. If it was absolutely necessary, you could use the gear from the old starter, but you'd have to take the thing apart which is not an easy thing.
I went through this a while back. There are two ring gears used on the FE and the lower pitch gear is also used on the FT I believe, or at least the 330MD.
I could be wrong, it's happened before.
But I don't think they are just going to swap easily.
You COULD get a starter for a very early FE, say, before 1965, and see if the gears are the same.

FE flywheels: 1958/64 = 153T / 1965/76 = 184T
FT flywheel: 188T
1965/76 FE & 1964/78 FT: Parts catalogs show same part number for the starter drive / But, different part numbers for the starters.
What's the dif? Both have the 3 mounting holes, so...the FT starter is prolly a H/D unit (Edit: Armature is different, drive end is the same).
