My truck is running excellant and I am happy with the mileage. (15 town-18Hwy) My problem is, every time I put a significant load on it(usually my 27 foot 5th wheel trailer) the mileage drops to 10MPG. I have tried driving 60-65, out of overdrive, in overdrive, on level ground. I just can't seem to get any better than 10MPG. I am very careful with the throttle. No black smoke on takeoff. I still have origininal NA injectors and IP pump in it. Do you guys have any suggestions? I believe I have a 3.55 rear end in it. It's been a while since I had it out on the road but I seem to remember 2200 RPM @ 70MPH Thanks. Tom
.I have a Banks Turbo installed. I was thinking since I installed the turbo, I should change the injectors to higher pressure (G) style and maybe a new IP. I would imagine the timing needs to be changed (advanced?) now with turbo. Anyone got suggestions?
Best results are changing the IP and injectors at the same time.
Advancing the timing also helps power.
The G code injectors and the DB2-5069 were the setup in the 7.3 turbo with an automatic from the factory.
Can I advance the IP timing a little for now until I get injectors and new IP?
The G code injectors and DB2-5069 IP you mention, are those what you recommend for mine with the aftermarket turbo?
Thanks for the reply Dave. I was hoping you would jump in there. What is your opinion as to my mileage? My RPMs are 1900 @60MPH so I THINK I have a 355 rear end. Correct? As you see in my sig, I have gone to the effort to get it to breathe better. I just feel I should do better than 10MPG towing. Tom
1900 RPM with an E4OD works out to 4.10 gears and 61.5 MPH with 235/85-16 tires in overdrive.
Is your trailer a flat bed or a box trailer?
I tow heavy a lot, but what I normally tow has almost no frontal area to catch the wind.
Here in the mountains I get 9 or so towing even though it has no frontal area.
Dragging an RV or big box trailer that has a big front on it can be even harder to drag than 14 or 15 thousand pounds on a flat bed is here in the mountains.
I ran over through the mountains yesterday to my grandmother's house to have dinner.
Driving my truck 8000 pounds empty and running grades in the 12 to 14 percent average I am expecting the MPG to be about 11 with my truck.
Yes, I was passing cars running up and down the mountains.
I have DPS Stage 1 injectors with a modified 7.3 turbo pump on my 6.9 turbo.
Black smoke anytime I ask for it with my right foot.
My timing is set to where i have a loud Power Stroke rattle when the timing advance is on.
When the advance kicks off the rattle stops, but just barely.
