My 96 bronco is having a starting problem. It will not start unless I turn the key to the run position 3 to 4 times before turning to start position. Then it will run for a short time and then die.I have chainged the fuel filter since this problem began but it did not help, any ideas, thanks Pike
Thanks for the reply,I pulled the codes and got p0411,p1131 and p1151.I will get a hold of a fuel pressure tester.by the way this is a 302 that I am having the problems with.I checked with the auto parts store they only priced me a intank pump is there another one? Also if I replace any sensors and or pump what brand is most reliable?thanks Pike
With further investigation I found a loose hose at the back of the motor. It is aproxamatly 3/4 and curved it is loose at the point where it would connect to a pipe that goes from head to head. The attachment is broken off of the top of a small diaphram looking part that threads on in about the middle of this pipe.
that sounds like an emissions check valve or sorts.
are you sure this is a fuel problem? when you say you have to turn the key to the run position do you mean the truck actually wont crank? or you need to do this to get the pump to kick on a few times?
Yes,that is what it was.I replaced it and the truck started breifly and died.I also bought new o2 sensors as per the codes.Anybody have a sugestion where to look next?Pike
What are you getting for a pressure reading? Rent the tester and see what you get
and we can go from there. If you feel like throwing parts at it then go ahead and
waste money. You could have cleaned your o2 sensors with a propane torch to get
them to read but now they won't take them back if you installed the new ones so,
What is your next question that you are not going to follow the advice you get??
Blue Beast, thanks for weighing in on the order in which I attack this problem. The check valve was broken as in no longer seving its purpose and causing a exhaust leak. The o2 sensors have not been changed. As for the fuel pressure gauge no one around here rents or loans them,so this afternoon I located one and if I did the test correctly and I am fairly confident.I have no fuel pressure,I can hear the relay engage and the pump does run.Could the fuel pressure regulater possibly be causing a problem? And if it is the pump while I have the tank out I would be interested in eliminating it in favor of a externaly mounted pump.Has anyone ever gone this route? That is all I have for now, once again thankyou Blue Beast for your sage advice and when I throw that fuel pump at my truck I will try not to break any thing,oh and I especially like the way that you double up on your question marks!!

Are you having a bad day blue beast? (just kidding-dont kill me )
Just a quick update,I am changing out the fuel pump and I am going to try doing it using a different pump.I found a good write up on the subject on FSB.
Might want to check for voltage at the pump prior to replacing it. You could also run a hot wire to the pump to rule out other wiring issues. Could be something as cheap as an ignition switch...which is a whole lot cheaper than a fuel pump.
Along those lines....is the Bronco pump unit accessible without dropping the tank ? I have fuel gauge issues to contend with.
Ever wonder why everyone puts in their .02 cents worth when it's only a penny for your thoughts ?

A whole mess of Merkur Scorpios
Replaced my fuel pump yesterday and she fired right up. I now have 35 pounds of fuel pressure, and along with replacing the o2 sensors and smog system repairs the cel is no longer on.I used a Walbro 190 lph pump and fabbed a new bracket.Toolman, the only other way to get at the fuel pump and sender unit that I know of would be to cut a acces hole in the floor. Thanks everyone for your help, this sight is great!
