Looking at a 2005 Ford F250 ext. cab 4x4 w/ the 5.4L V8. Does anybody have news (good or bad) about this year/style/motor of this truck. Also what is the jiberish I read about spark plugs thinking they are rockets? anything will be a big help.
On a 2005 the plug blow out issue has been resolved. It can still happen but not likely. Best thing to do is check the torque on the plugs. The 5.4 is a good engine but in a heavy truck like the super duty it lacks a little in the HP department. Good luck in your truck purchase.
thanks alot. i already love the truck and haven't even purchased it yet. still tryin to decide if it is a good deal for the money. Anyother problems I should know about. (Im just tryin to learn as much as possible)
If the production date is prior to May 2005 and you are buying it from a dealer - make sure they replace the cam phasers as part of the deal. The 5.4L v8's built prior to this date develop an annoying ticking sound (doesn't affect performance) but does get on your nerves. If you are not buying from a dealer and the truck has this ticking noise, make sure you point out the problem to the seller and either get the price reduced or have them do the work for you for the purchase price. There is a TSB about this. The problem was solved on production trucks after May 2005 with the newer cam phaser gear.
The only other stuff that may go wrong is small and can be solved through doing searches here. Things like the lack of grease on the driveshaft and the bump it makes when you shift into drive.
How many miles on it? Again, if it is from a Ford dealer make sure they pull the plugs and put antiseize on them if you are at or over 50,000 miles - you don't want the grief of having them break when you go to replace them later on and a $2,000 bill from the dealer when it happens off of warranty. The plug blowout issue will not be your problem on the newer 5.4L's. If the seller/dealer won't do this - you may want to read up on the proper procedure for doing it early before you have problems later.
Other than that, enjoy it. I love my 2005 5.4L and it has plenty of power for what I should ever need it to do.
wow, thanks alot, i am going to look more into that for sure. Its got around 24,000 miles on it. Red Carpet lease from ford but the truck is owned by a little mom and pop used car dealership. Condition is equilivent to a new truck.
