You get 17 MPG with 2.73 gears! My god that is good. I get 15 with 3.08 gears. I am switching to 3.55 as soon as I get a chance. I don't think I am backwards on this. Am I? I thought the hihger your gear # the better your mileage is.

Lower (numerically higher) gears generally give you more "power," but usually slightly lower gas mileage.
Gears that are too high (numerically lower) that put the engine out of its torque curve can also drop mileage.
I get 15-17 with 3.08 and no overdrive.

Primary rig is:
95' F-150 EB 300/6 5 spd with 4" Superlift, MSD, Ram Air, Gibson Exhaust, 32" BFG Muds
THERE ARE SOME PICS IN MY GALLERY!! :-)
Then theres:
88' F-250 Superduty 351 + c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 and a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed, 65mph, Go Baby Go!
The newest addition to the Ford family is a 99' Mustang GT 4.6L
For example. The above mentioned Dodge got 26mpg when we had 3.50 gears in it but dropped 4mp when we put in 4.11's BUT pulling power going up steep grades greatly increased. We also lost 20mph off the top-end
I'm going to do a little work to my truck this summer, I'm sure I'm loosing some gas mileage somewhere because I have seen several people claim better gas mileage than what I get even though they have deeper gears and no overdrive!

I used to run my '84 carbed 300 I6 right up to 4000 RPM. Don't know the redline, but horsepower peak being around 3400 RPM, 4000 seems a good limit. Actually, on my '95 fuel injected 300 I6 I have hit 4000 but normally don't exceed 3600--there is no need to. The engine should run all day at 2600-2900 RPM, but only need to with an appropriate load. I ran a 3000 mile trip in my '95 with 3.08 rear end and 2000 lb trailer thru Rocky Mountains and back to Michigan and never used OD, which meant I was turning about 2600 RPM most of the way going 65-70 mph. Ran fine. In fact, the truck loved it--and so did I! Never saw a 300 run better than when it is working with a good load.
