I want to do an engine swap, i am 17, i have money, tools, and a shop, but i cant make up my mind, my 78 f-150 4x4 has a 300 I-6. Its getting old, i want to get some more power for off-roading and i am thinking either a 351w (because of the power and theres so much aftermarket parts), a 390 (because i have a friend that has one that he might sell me), or build up my 300 I-6 (because i have three other trucks with the same engine). Does anyone have an opinion?

I have a 300-6 in my 85 Bronco with a 3 spd overdrive manual. I also have a 390 in my 72 F-250 I can't beat the torque of the in line ssix and better gas mpg. I love my 390 don't get me wrong but, I think that the six gives better torque for off road use.
I just love to 300 I6. I have experience with this motor from an early '80's F250 company truck that I drove a few times at my first job, twice hauling a big GE electric motor. Also a buddy had a F100 with the I6 and it would fly. You have already mentioned commonality with your other trucks so this seems like a smart choice.
When I 1st got my 300-6, I had no idea what was good about it. It just came with the truck. And I do love its longevity and torgue... But like the other respondents, I've had V-8s. I hate to say it, I wish I had my 351 C in my truck or just give me my Mach 1 back. The 300-6 is a different kind of motor. I think it has advantages that Ford didn't even intend, namely longevity and decent pulling power. But if I were 17, I'd go for the V-8. When you're 17, you just want to go fast.
