[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-May-02 AT 09:06 PM (EST)]Alrighty, I've got a 2wd '83 F-150, bought it about 8 months ago and blew the motor out of it. bought a used '86 motor of the same size and had it put in, I've currently got straight pipes running out the back and Bosch platinum plugs in the motor, it has the old standard 1 bbl carb on it with the automatic choke, 3-speed on the column. I want to getting running the best it can be, what do I do to tune this baby up?
Also, I've got a leak in the manifold, I wanna take the sucker off, but when going to do so, I noted that the carb was mounted on the manifold, I'm not real knowledgable about such things but I'm assuming it's a dual funtion deal? what would I do to replace the manifold gasket without messing up my carb?
the carb is bloted to the manifold. the manifold bolts might be hard to take out tho, due to age and elements. just unbolt the carb and you have access to your manifold
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-May-02 AT 09:32 AM (EST)]When I first got my '85 I put in cheap Champion plugs, an MSD coil and upped the gap on the plugs by about .05 to .08. Definitely helped smooth it out a little.
When you unbolt the carb, double check all the screws holding the carb together. Mine were crazy loose! These 1bbl carbs are well known for loosening the screws on themselves. In the end I just rebuilt my carb. It was pretty dirty inside and was causing a huge loss in power.
Also, check your timing and replace the fuel filter on the carb if that is where it is at.
Alrighty, doesn't sound too bad. I might as well rebuild the carb while I got it off, shouldn't take too long. Just have to be carefull and not twist any bolts off..
