Hey...I've got a 300 I6 in my 65' f-250. It has pretty good power and is an excellent motor. But I'm wanting something bigger or more powerful because I want some bigger tires and more power would be nice to have. I was originally thinking of a 351, but i was told a 352 would fit more easily into my truck. Then I was told a 390 because it gets the same amount of gas but more power. Would there be an extreme mpg changes b/c my 300 doesn't get good milage as it is. And I've got another daily driver to keep down on the gas(its a ford too). Would the power increase be much? I'm guessing it would? And would it be worth it? Because my 300 right now will about pull down a barn w/ 4.56's in the axles...So if I put a 390 in it I think it would be a machine to reckon w/ around here...hehe Thanks for any info. Austin
Austin, You didn't say, but I am guessing that you have a 3 speed + granny, tranny and with the 456 rear, you will need to buy some stock in a gas company before you install a V8, because if you think it loves gas now, you aint seen nothing yet.
A couple of issues, The FEs 352 & 390 will bolt on your engine perches, but won't bolt to your tranny. The 351W will have to have different engine perches, but will bolt to your tranny. You will have to change radiators in either case.
If you have further questions, feel free to post them.
If i do go that route i would go w/ a 390 probably. Yes I do have a 3 speed. If I got a new engine I would get a whole new combonation. The engine/tranny/ and radiator adn all other components. I have a good ole 84' Bronco II w/ a 2.9L so it would help me on gas! I would just save all week to buy enough gas to drive it around on friday night!..hehe Would a 390 be the best bet out of those engines though?(351,352,360,390) Thanks. Austin
The 390 is mighty hard to beat. The 352 was first and then the 390, and when the emissions started coming around the 360 was born. It is a 390 block with a 352 crank. The 351W is from another engine family, is more modern, and what Nascar is running today.
