Does anyone have any experience with nitrous on an explorer? I understand everything except for not having a distributor. How do you retard the timing or will it retard automatically when it senses detonation?
It will retard when it senses detonation, but the detonation will only occur when the engine starts leaning out. If you are leaning out, you will burn the valves. Be very careful with nitrous. It can easily overheat and damage the internals of the engine. You can also melt exhaust components as well.
I have used nitrous on a bunch of cars before with zero problems but never with a distributorless vehicle. That really my only concern is the timing retard. It is only a 75 hp NOS dry kit.
Well i hooked it up and so far so good. It doesn't ping and the only real problem is it doesn't want to shift into second on spray but it does have 230,000 miles so its to be expected. We have a grand marquis with a 150 shot to beat and we will probably see what it does at the track on friday. Ill update later.
Went to the track last friday and it went a best of a 15.01 at 89 with a 1.95 60 ft. It would have gone faster but we had to let of the spray between every gear or it would hit the rev limiter. The kid in the Gran Marquis bitched out so I guess we won. Also it is AWD but the transfer case went and we took out the front shaft so that was with 2wd 3.73 limited slip with 275/50-15 drag radials on weld rims.
