How can I tell if my66 f100 has the original motor? I bought it last month.It has a 240six w/3 on the tree . It has a newer Holley carb. and a "6=8"intake manifold. It runs like a top. I am curious to see if it is the original motor. I was told the motor ws rebuilt about 5 years ago.
Thanks guys! This site is the Best thing I've found since finding my truck!! My Vin. # is; F 1 0 A C 8 6 4 3 7 4 .
Welcome to FTE
F10 = F100 2WD
A = 240 I-6 1V
C = Ontario, Canada Ford Truck Assembly Plant
864374 = 1966
On the left door face near the latch, you will find the Warranty (VIN) Plate. Besides the VIN, there are codes found there that when decoded, will tell what city the truck was ordered from, the original exterior color and color/pattern of the seat upholstery, the rear axle type and ratio, type of transmission, wheelbase, GVWR, yadda yadda yadda. All those codes can be decoded here on FTE.

About '64-5 or so Ford started putting little tags on the engines for identification. These tags usually don't last unfortunately. Look around the coil mounting area, there might still be a little tag that will give you the motor information. Check this site: http://www.geocities.com/edwins63/I6ID.html & go to the 'small block' six site, toward the bottom of the page you'll see what one of these tags looks like.
If the tag is now gone, look at the casting number under the exhaust manifold near the oil pan mounting area. You'll most likely need to do some cleaning, but if its the original motor, the casting number will most likely start off with C5AE, or C6AE. Carefull with ford casting numbers though, the engine my still have been a replacement some time in the past even though the "numbers match."

The same casting numbers were used for years, until another casting number replaced it, so ID'ing what yr an engine is from the casting number is difficult at best. Casting numbers do not translate to part numbers.
Here's an example of a long running casting number: D1VE-6015-AB = 1971-mid year 1979 429/460. One of the 2 finished bare blocks from this casting (D1VZ-6010-A) was also used as a replacement block for 1968/70's.
D1VZ-6010-A was used thru 1/13/1973, it was replaced by D5TZ-6010-B which uses the same casting number.
