Rear End Issues

Okay, I know I have a rare bird that some folks seem to deny, but my '63 F250 unibody has the original 4.88 rear axle in it. Great! ...in case I want to pull down an old barn, but I'd like to be able to tow my little vintage camper down the road at speeds greater than 50 mph. Are there any rare birds out there that might know whether a lower ratio 'pumpkin' can be swapped out, or what it would take to reduce my rear end to something other than an elephant-tamer?

Thank You,
Eric

What's the AXLE code off the Warranty (VIN) Plate?

The only rear axle for a 1963 F250 I could find with a 4.88-1 is the Limited Slip Spicer 60. There were other ratios available, but I need the code to verify what you have. There's no third member to swap (9" only), the parts all come out piece by piece through the inspection cover.

Rear End Issue

Thank You,

The Warranty number is F25CK381988
Trans code F
Axle code B6

I looked these all up a good while back on my electronic shop manual from Detroit Iron, but please help me to verify what I have.

By the way, the original tag is STILL pinned under two rear end bolts:

CITT-BV
2393-4 12-62 4.88

Not many this old that are still as 'stock' as me' ole Belle,

Eric

F25 = F250 2WD

C = 292 2V

K = Kansas City Assembly Plant

381988 = Assembled in February 1963

F = Warner T-98 4 Speed

B6 = Spicer (Dana) 60 / 4.88-1 / Limited Slip / 5200 lb. Rear Axle Capacity

C1TT-BV = see above

4-12-62 = April, 12, 1962 = Axle Build Date

Spicer 60 ratios available for F250's = 1961/72: 10 spline pinion gear = 4.10-1 / 4.56-1 / 4.88-1. In 1966, two further ratios were added: 3.54-1 and 3.73-1. These have a 29 spline pinion gear, so in order to use one in your truck, the companion flange will have to be changed to match.

Thank you!

Can you confirm that I am reading correctly that gear ratios for original 10 spline pinion gear = 4.10-1 / 4.56-1 / 4.88-1 could be directly placed out, and the the later 3.54-1 and 3.73-1 with 29 spline pinion gear would need companion flange changed to match...?

If you can locate either the 3.54 or 3.73 ratio rear ends, the gears will work in your housing, but since the spline count is 29, the companion flange that fits between the driveshaft (coupling shaft) and the rear axle, will have to be changed to match. You could also change the entire rear axle, but it has to be from a 1972 or earlier F250. The 1973 and later rear ends are wider.

Rear End Issue

Kewl. Thanks for your help.

Have to admit that I am a ho' to stock condition, and there can't be many slicks out there still alive running a 4.88, but I'm running about 10 mph too slow to be close to safe on the highway (10mph faster would still be 10mph slower than the speed limit on most highways 'round here).

Any dragsters out there looking for a 4.88???

Eric
