It's getting to be winter and we all know what that means: new tires for the inevitable ice storms here in Kansas. I've got a '90 F-150 xlt Lariat 2wd. My question is: I'm getting new wheels when i get my new tires and i'm wanting to get 17" or 18" wheels. I also want to put larger tires on my truck. I've got 265/70r15 on there now. The stock size was a 235/75r15 if I'm not mistaken. I'm wanting to put something along the lines of 285/60r18, 285/55r18 or 275/65r18. Any input on the best size (or what will fit). Also, thinking of staggering the sizes. Any recommendations on tire brand would be helpful as well. I'm going for a good street performance but I wanna handle myself in a little off-road applications.
Confusing post... The title is about winter tires and the body is all about 285 profile performance rubber.. the 2 things could not be more mutually exclusive. Get whatever 18" shoes catch your eye.. the bigger they are the worse the truck will perform because the final gear ratio is worse. Also consider if all 4 tires are not the same size then you can't rotate them, and the fronts will wear more on the outside edges than the rears. Then fit some real winter tires like the Goodyear Nordic on the stock wheels in stock or near stock size for the icy winter roads.

What conanski said . If youwant a snow tire get some.
I go back to about stock narrow tires work better in snow. I drive average of 500 miles a week and have tried both 33"12:00 and stock 235/75/ 15 I go back to stock and put the big uns on when the snow isnt around. I have swapped them mid week just to se which is better.
