is it a 4x4, cause when you switch between 2hi and 4hi it makes a clicking noise and it clicks a couple of times then it goes away to show the t-case is engaged or disengageing
I have the exact same problem with my 00 F150 4X4 5.4 liter. It makes the tapping noise for about 10 seconds, and then goes away. only makes the noise when stepping on the gas. It is not the 4 wheel drive, and it is not a rock in the tire. It has to do with something under the hood, as it sounds like it comes from the passenger side under the hood. It stops making the noise after about 10 seconds. Any information would be helpful, as I am lost.
Take a look at the exhaust manifolds on your truck, in particular at the fasteners that hold them in place. The problem is that the OE studs rust away and break off resulting in the ticking noise.
The solution to the problem is to replace ALL of the studs and nuts with the stainless steel parts available from the Ford dealer parts department. Replace the exhaust manifold gaskets too. It helps to remove the inner fender liners to gain access to the studs and nuts. Good luck!
if you do not want to get them from a ford dealer the next best thing is finding a store that sells ARP studs, alot of drag racers with high HP and TQ only use ARP studs
