Hello all. I have been using your site for years, a tremendous wealth of great info, but this is my first time posting. I have a 96 F350 PSD, 160K all stock. Truck has been running great, the only problem has been the alternator is starting to go, the battery light comes on intermittently, but I was going to replace that next week. I was driving the truck today, and it just shut off. Now I have no Wait to Start lights, no smoke out the tail pipe, and no RPM when cranking. Engine cranks well, batteries are good, and fuses all appear good. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Rick,
When I checked the fuses this morning, I forgot to check in the distribution box. Sure enough, #22 was blown. What do you mean my unplug the fuel heater? I can't see any bad wires in there, what are the chances that the fuse just went bad because because of age? I have a long drive home tonight and don't like the thought of getting stranded.
The heater element is in the bottom of the fuel filter canister, they deteriorate over time and short out. Removing or unplugging it should prevent you from getting stranded again. If you're in a hurry, just unplug it, if you have the time, pull the fuel filter and investigate further.
on the side of the bowl is 2 red wires. unplug the top red one. install new 30 amp maxi fuse. drive truck tonight. replace heater later if you want to.
Thanks for the pic Rick, and thanks to everyone for all the great info. I have disconnected the heater, replaced the fuse and the truck fired right up. It will at least get me home now, and I will replace the heater this week. Thanks for all the fast responses, you all really helped me out of a jam! Can't thank you enough!
Thanks again for all the posts everyone. I just installed a new fuel heater. I live in Connecticut, and we do get several nights a year well below 0, I figured for the $50, it was worth it, and if it goes bad again, I have spare fuses with me. Saw on another thread that the nut that holds the fuel heater in place is a LEFT HANDED THREAD! Glad I stopped what I was doing to check with the experts before I ruined it, since I couldn't get it out the usual way. BTW, a basin wrench for a sink works perfectly for getting at the nut. Thanks again everyone!
