I have a 2002 7.3 psd and a banks exhaust bighead w.g.and a big hoss
level 3 tuner oh and k&n filter, egt and boost pillar gauges ,79,000 miles
The truck has perfomed flawlessly and still dose but the service engine soon
light came on as I was driving up a steep grade pulling a loaded cargo trailer
and the p.u. bed was loaded too this is the 2nd trip to Texas in 4 days as
there is where i'm moving , at 80 miles out I aborted my trip, light stayed on
back to the house . after about 30 minutes I restarted it, light was off had I kept drivin I coulda been in gila bend by now or?
First time its'ever happeded I have it serviced reguarly any Ideas as to what caused the light to come on ? I plan on taking it in Tuesday to the dealer.
What did your gauges show before the light tripped? The light could be related to the tuner, but without getting the codes read there's no way to tell.
Yep. You need to get the fault codes read.. It is a guessing game otherwise.. You will get a SES light with a tuner, but usually the light will go off after you quit pulling the hill or accelerating faster than the your HPOP can keep up..

The SES light was more than likely due to a momentary over boost, and this is a soft code that doesn't hurt anything. On my early 99 the light goes off after the boost lowers to normal range, but on some trucks you might need a key off/on cycle to reset the SES light. The code does stay stored in the PCM, and should you ever have it scanned for codes it should still show up indicating a wastegate malfunction. The light is a sign that the PCM is detecting more boost than is safe for the turbo, and it's defueling to limit the boost. This is actually useful, because it helps to keep you from blowing your turbo.
BTW, I'm on my second stock turbo, as the first one blew due to all the abuse I gave it from my Banks big head and K&N Aircharger and 70 HP Superchip. I now run a stock actuator, an AIS, and a DP 40 tow, and with this combination my boost self limits to 22 psi and I get no over boost SES lights.

Stock gauges were normal , egt was showing at 900,boost was 21lbs ,maybe
more as my eyes were alerted to the SES light.

Why a stocker? and not an aftermarket just curious
I've had the banks for five years and up until now the only thing I've suffered is poor fuel economy.

Well, I installed the Big head in the fall of 1999 as part of a Banks stinger kit. My turbo blew towing up a grade 5 years later. I decided I'd rather run a lower boost and hopefully get more than 5 years out of my replacement turbo, so I ditched the big head and went back to the stock actuator.
The SES light usually comes on at 22 psi boost, but the exact value depends on several other parameters. What gear were you in, and what diff ratio do you have?

What ernesteugene said was what I was leaning toward. It sounds like you may have just had an overboost.
I disconnected the big hoss tuner this morning for the trip to the dealer tomorro to read the code . Would it be wise at this time to re-install the stock wastegate, I remember what a pita it was putting on the big head,
I just don't want to be replacing a turbo if I can help it.
The truck runs fine without the tuner but I do miss it and pullin a grade I'll
miss it even more.
