There's Hypermax also, but the ATS is the way to go. You keep your pump and injectors, just turn up the pump a bit. I turbo'd mine at 175,000, it's getting close to 200 now. Still runs fine. Lost one injector since, but not really the turbo's fault. The only weak link would probably be the head gaskets. Mine are still holding on though. The exhaust is usually 3 inch, sold as a separate kit incase you want to build it yourself.
they all are about the same thing they all work the same and give you the same ammount of gains. The only difference is price. if you spend the 2500 for a banks kit you will get the exhaust system and everything. Its all more less a personal opinion.
They all take a while to put on, but the ATS takes the least amount of time and has the best engineering in my opinion. The Banks stuff started out really crappy, but has made leaps and bounds over the years. They still have quality issues tho. Stuff like pipes not fitting. Hypermax's pulse design is more of a wide open kit, where the wastegated setups work a lot sooner in the RPM range.
Spec, acording to Hypermax, the pulse system kicks in sooner?? I as well many others on this site are looking to purchase a turbo....which one is the big question? As 1978ford250 stated, they all work and give you the same amount of gains, but on an IDI site with this much knowledge and experience, I'm surprised there hasn't been a real comparison amoung the three?? Don't get me wrong, I don't want some one making the decision for me, I just want to make the best informed decision possible. I as many others will appreciate any & all imput, thankyou.
I have had two ATS turbo systems and have swapped it several times to different motors. The install is rather easy, the parts are well made, it works good and can make a lot of boost.
The main reason there is no comparison is most people other than mechanics do not have experience with all the turbo systems, they have one that works for them and they stay with that brand.
Ford used the ATS system on their engine, they worked together to develop the turbo system.
You just heard from a mechanic that has installed several of each of the turbo systems and he told you what he thought of them.
I put on 4 of the Pulse Hypermaxes way back in the 90s. The power was good, they built around 10-11 psi. I just couldn't stand how hard they went on. Weak little pipes with ball sockets that wear out and leak going to the turbo also. We tried an ATS for number 5 and never looked back. All the neat castings, O-ring connections, and it looked good under the hood. I can't even remember how many ATS's I've done since. I'm guessing around 30. The last kit I put on was a Banks in an E350 cube van. It seemed like a very nice kit, but the crossover pipe didn't fit very well between the exhaust manifolds. I did my best to tweak it and got it bolted on finally. It came back a week later with the right side flange broken off. Never had this problem with ATS.
Dave, I don't mean to beat a dead horse with chimming in with the same question and thankyou once again for patience and your advice....I guess the comparison info is rather wishfull thinking of me. I have researched this online and recieved the usual -our is better cause....#$%&*^&^&% well you get the idea. I trust the opinions and experience of this forum a lot more than manufacture's claim! Your opinion carries a lot wieght and is greatly appreciated!
