I'm thinking I have water pump failing. Yesterday I got to the house and had coolant dripping from that area. This is my first diesel so I was wondering if there was any special procedures for the water pump or anything special with the coolant. Will be headed to the parts store after a while. Thanks for any tips or info!

 

the only real PITA is getting the fan/clutch off. if your autoparts store loans tools ask if they the tool to remove it. if they do not i take a c-clamp and clamp it to the top of the pulley on the waterpump and as you turn the nut (counter clock wise) it will connect the out-put on the top of the waterpump and hold it so you can loosen the nut, the nut is pretty big and i use a small pipe wrench on it

Tater..You can keep the green coolant and add the sca (Ford sells it as "Diesel Cooling System Additive") after checking the coolant with a test strip. The strip will tell you how much to add.. It is quite important to have this additive to prevent cavitation which will destroy your engine block. Fleetguard sells a test strip DCA4 Test Strip Kit CC2602A. OR.... You can flush the system and change to the red stuff (Shell) which does not need any sca. see the following posts for more info..

I dont mean to hijack the thread,,,,,,but I am getting ready to buy a new water pump myself & cant seem to find the 1 piece pumps anymore, only the the stock style with the removeable lower tube.
Does anyone have a link for the 1 piece pumps?

You've already gotten some pointers on pumps, so I'll leave that be. You have three choices really when it comes to coolant. Stay with the green stuff that requires testing & additive every 15k or so, go Gold like they did in the later models (mine came from the factory with gold), or go ELC (aka "red kool-aid"). The ELC most folks use is the Rotella ELC or the brand carried by Wal-Mart & Napa -- "Final Charge Global". This is the same stuff as Rotella ELC, so it's up to you. Wal-Mart only carries the 50/50 mix type though. If you want to change, you have to pick up about 20 gallons of distilled to run through your system to get all the old stuff out. There are other threads dealing with how to flush to change coolants, so I'll leave that out. I'll be changing mine in the Spring to Red. Also, now would be a great time to add the 203* stat and billet housing as well as a coolant filter. You can get all that from DieselSite:

Tater, follow everyones suggestions on coolant and additives. Don't skimp on rebuilt pump,the best price for a new pump is at Northern autoparts(that I could find). Air text makes these pumps for several car manufacturers, of cousre Ford wants $300 for same pump. Merles wanted $180 for a rebuilt pump that started leaking out of weep hole in 10k, I even used the additives. So, I bought this Airtext pump for $94 with shipping, new not rebuilt. 60k and still going strong.
