My 05 f250 wouldnt start this evening, opened the hood to find that the battery terminals are corroded and broken off. The only way to get myself home with a quick fix was to splice the corroded end off the started cable, and cut and splice both ends from the main battery and the alternator. Is there a battery cable harness I can get to fix this? If so where can I get it. thanks for any possitive feedback.
Mike.
You can get a universal battery cable at any auto parts store that will work fine. You may have to do a little surgery to make it fit, but it will work fine.
Don't try to use the cheap battery terminals that clamp the battery cable between two surfaces, they mostly do not work and usually create more problems.
It's always a good idea to replace the cable. If the corrosion actually caused the terminal to separate, you probably have corrosion inside of the cable 12-18 inches up.
Don't forget the negative cable, look at it closely to see if it is damaged.
Clean your terminals off with a brush, a lot of water and baking soda Look carefully around and under the battery to make sure the acid didn't eat at the paint. A flush and some rattle can spray paint could save you from serious rust issues next year.
When you put it all back together, use those stupid little felt rings that go on the battery posts. They really do work at preventing this from happening again.
ordered the possitive battery wire harness from Ford $80.93 I'll pick it up Monday. I tried Kragen this morning and the girl pulled off a lousey wire from the shelf and said this might work
Napa sells a nice Battery term cleaner in a can. It is under serious pressure so ease into it and dont get it on your paint just wash it off with water after a few secs.. Once clean could use the old reliable vasoline coat your terms with it good and even. I use an item I got from a buddy at Bellsouth can't remember the name but it works real well. You basically want to keep air off your terms. I check mine every time I wash my truck kinda a routine deal for me. Sucks to hear you had to drop 80 bucks for some wire. I would have just made it myself /wink
