Parking Brake Cables

I need new parking brake cables and trying to search for the right ones, but I have some confusion. My truck is a 77 F250 4x4 highboy VIN F26HLX91327. Only RH and LH cables I can find are for a 76 4x4 listed before serial # Y40000. 77 4x4 F250 are listed as from serial # Y40000. Do I want the ones listed for 76, but then why list them for 76?

i had problems with one of my old trucks. it was my plow truck, my cables were obsolete, no ford or aftermarket or anything. i tried a year (?) newer. it worked. if you find a good parts store they can look in a book and it lists measurements. i used to do it for guys who lifted trucks. most places don't know that type of book exists. so good luck.

i worked over 10 years in the aftermarket parts business. it doesn't pay well. so that is why nobody knows whats going on and why the person behind the counter has no idea whats going on.

What is wrong with the originals? Are they frozen? I have fixed frozen parking brake cables on 3 trucks using the following method:
1) grip one of the cable casing ends tightly in a vise
2) grip the on end of the cable with a pair of vise-grips and while holding the cable taut with vise grips, hit the nose of them with a hammer. Do this a few times as you try to break the cable free from the rust. You may need to turn the cable around in the vise a few times as you hammer it in both directions.
3) Once the cable frees in the casing, mount the cable casing vertically in a vise.
4) Mount the "high" cable end in a variable speed reversible power drill.
5) Pull the cable all the way up and coat it with motor oil.
6) Set the drill direction so that the cable winding will try to force the oil down into the cable casing.
6) Turn the drill on a slow speed and feed the cable down as far as it will go.
7) With the drill still running, pull the cable back up as far as it will go.
8) Coat the cable with motor oil and go back to step 6. Repeat this process until oil starts coming out of the low end of the cable casing.

Unless your cables are badly deteriorated, this method should give you many years of service before the cables need to be treated again.

I think you mis-understood.

The E-brake cables are tedious thing for correct application .

There were so many applications per these trucks before 1978

.

Freeing them up ?

I use diesel fuel first.

Never thought of using a drill though.

Thanks.

There is a company out here called "California push and pull". They can make almost any cable in any size/style. I had them make the parking brake cables for my fathers 1940 Ford coupe. Fit perfect!

My deal is, I don't have any cables. Building truck from ground up and the cables were cut off the chassis to begin with, so starting from scratch. I'm looking for the RH, LH rears and the front.

The 1973/79 Ford Light Trucks Parts Catalog-final issue 10/88 sez for 1976 F250 Regular Cab 4WD in Section 23.2; Parts List 40B:

Before Y40,001 2-D6TZ-2A635-J .. Right/Left Rear Cable

From Y40,001 to Y60,001 D7TZ-2A635-E .. Right Rear Cable / D7TZ-2A635-F .. Left Rear Cable

After Y60,001 D7TZ-2A635-G .. Right Rear Cable / D7TZ-2A635-H .. Left Rear Cable

Why 1977 part numbers for 1976 parts?

Because Ford updated the original 1976 part numbers to 1977 part numbers.

FTE sponsor GREEN SALES has them all - 800-543-4959.

I just used Green Sales' online parts locator to check the availability of these cables. Any questions, you can call them and ask.

Thanks Bill.

I was looking at Broncograveyard mainly and even the "not so popular LMC site" for reference. The listing was confusing, but Bill cleared that up. So, my other question, Is the front cable listed under 76 also?

Um...I don't think that the parking brake applies to the front...
