Highway Shake

hello everyone,
i've got a 2000 Ford ranger with 75,000 miles on it. Everything runs great and smooth until i get on the highway. When i start getting close to 70 MPH the truck starts shaking a little bit and gets worse the faster i go, seems to be in the front end. I know it needs an allignment, would that fix that? I thought maybe it was the tires so i rotated the front ones to the back but no change. any input? thanks

Check one of of your tires for a bubble caused by a broken belt inside the tire. Sometimes you only feel it at high speeds until it gets worse.

Jack up the truck and spin the wheel you think is the problem and look down the tread line to see if a tread or belt seperated. I had one go on mine and was only noticeable like I mentioned above.

Where do you feel the vibration? is it in the sterring wheel or the seat? Stg whl...front tires/suspension; seat...rear. Since you rotated the tires and there was no change, you can rule them out. If it is in the stg whl, then you should inspect the suspension and steering linkage to be sure there are no worn parts like the tierods, ball joints, etc.

If it needs an alignment, you should get that done. The alignment specialist will let you know if any parts are bad, since he can't do an alignment if it has bad parts in the stg linkage/suspension. You might be amazed at how much an alignment can make a vehicle ride and handle.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

90% chance that it is alignment and balance of the tires. if you have a bent rim, it will come up in the balance

Slack anywhere in the Steering linkage will cause a shake, also loose/worn wheel bearings.

to answer above question, its not really in the steering wheel just a tad, more so shakes the truck overall. it kind of sounds like a tire just doesn't sound right but hard to tell beacuse there really isn't much noise

I had the same problem a couple of months ago and it was a tire. It was very hard to spot what tire. spent lots of time in several shops balancing, checking suspension, alignments, and drive shaft checks just to name the majors. One old mechanic in a ran down shop gareenteed me it was a tire and suggested using the spare and swapping each tire to find the bad one. Sure enough I found it, got new tires and wallah, problem solved. That's just my case. It could very well be any of the above listed items.
Good luck and keep us updated

About 5 years ago I bought a replacement set of Firestone tires for my '92 Ranger, that I've had since new, and I had balance problems right from the start. The place where I bought them rebalanced them once then told me there was something wrong with my truck suspension and drive shaft and they wanted to do all kinds of tests and analysis' on it that would've cost me plenty.

Come to find out (after shortly moving to another nearby city) all 4 tires were out of round, some worse than others. The Firestone dealer at my new community wouldn't replace them without charging me for tread wear, which was minimal in this case, but I did get the worst 3 replaced and that took care of the majority of the problem, but there was always some slight bouncing afterwards that I never bothered to deal with.

Now it's time for me to get a new set of tires and guess what? You got it, I won't be going back to the Firestone dealer. Instead I will either buy from Discount Tire or Pep Boys.
