i have a 92 4.0 ranger and its starts and all but the starter wont disengage it stays on the flywheel ring gear so i dropped the tranny and replaced it because the teeth were worn on it well after doing that i also replaced the battery solinoid and battery cable asembly well after getting all back together i started it and the ground wire that goes from the starter to the soliniod got really hot and melted that plastic casing well now the starter is not disengaging again

When you remove the wire with the rubber boot from the starter relay does it stop cranking?

Ok, looks like the ignition switch is shorted out.

Heres how the start circuit works.

Turn the key to start & the ignition switch connects 12 volts to the starter relay on the "S" terminal. Thats the wire with the rubber boot.

The starter relay closes & connects 12 volts to the starter solenoid on the starter & it cranks.

Try this shift to reverse or drive & reconnect the rubber boot.

If it does'nt crank non stop now, replace the ignition switch.

OOPS, thought you probably had a slugomatic.

DO NOT connect the rubber boot with the truck in gear. Might run yourself over.

Looks like theres a cross in the wiring somewhere between the clutch safety switch & the rubber boot on the starter relay.

Bottom line on a manual is there should only be voltage to the rubber boot when the key is turned to start & the clutch is depressed.

Looks like the red/light blue wire (rubber boot) is crossed with another wire that has voltage on it.
