My 92 Explorer is making an awfull noise when it starts. After it fires up, there is a noise - almost like the starter is not disengaging. As far as I can tell it keeps this up as long as the truck is running.
I have tried two different starters and both of them are doing the same thing, so I am thinking that it is not a problem with the starter itself.
Also - the battery gauge jumps way down. So something is tugging at my juice also.
I thought about shims, but there were no shims on it originally so I'm not sure.
Try this, start it up & then remove the wire with the rubber boot from the starter relay & let us know what happens. It just pulls off no tools required.
Sounds like the soleniod is sticking. Try bumping it with a screw driver handle or some other firm non-metalic object just after starting up. It's the device that the + wire from the battery runs too on the right fender. Or, better yet, you can check it without running the engine by disconnecting the wire that goes to the starter (the other large wire like the one coming from the battery) and turn the key to start and then release it. If the terminal that the starter wire was hooked to still has +12 V with the common to ground then the solenoid is sticking.
