need opinions..

89 f150, I-6, 5spd, 2wd.

thinkin about changing the oil in the trans and rear. would this be a good idea? if so, what should i use?

one mechanic said the rear is a good idea but he would probably hold off in the trans because it may make a problem come out or somthing... like it may be there but the older oil is keeping it ok

It is ALWAYS a good thing to change the oil. It's an old wive's tale that old fluid holds an old trans together. Especially with a manual. You're not an old wife, are you?

I'm pretty sure that your trans uses MERCON (now MERCON V) ATF. All the newer manuals use that.

Always better off with fresh oil, ATF, rear end gear lube, ect. If nothing else, "old" oil cannot suspend any more containaments safely and the additive package is spent.

No engine or transmission benefits from old, negelected oil. With old oils, you are much more suspectible to sludge, engine and transmission varnish build-up with deposits.

Lastly, "old oils" cannot take heat, transfer heat, and protect vital engine and transmission parts as fresh lubricants can. If my mechanic tauted keeping old lubricants in because it keeps a problem from developing, I would slowly back way, turn and run as fast as I can!

I would take a close look at Royal Purple's engine, ATF and rear end lubricants. It's money well spent for your'89 Ford F-150. The 300CI I-6 is a great engine. My brother in Ohio has a '82 F-100 short bed with the 300CI I-6. 280K+ miles tooka 600 mile trip (round trip) with zero problems and nearly 18.4 MPG highway, two Saturdays ago.

1982 was last of the F-100s, I beleive.

ed,
thanks for the info... i can get royal purple at my local auto parts store...

the atf.. is that for the trans? any weight or? and what for the rear end?

i was going to use them for motor oil but i heard a tip that using diesel oil is the best, so i was going to use rotella t, which is for both diesel and gas enignes

head to this site and use their search. pay the $20 to become a preferred customer, even if you never buy anything ever again, it'll save you a bunch of money now!

Use MERCON or MERCON V ATF. There are no "weights" for ATF.

thanks for the "wow" and that big list... but it still doesnt answer my question.. i dont want a list of different oils, i want the best one to run.

i was just looking for one answer... like " use 75w90 in the rear because" and "use atf in the trans becauase"

and i am looking for other brands because i can not find a place around me that sells amsoil.

i am leaning towards lucas... anyone have anything bad to say?

I have had good results with Royal Purple Syncromax in my 5speed trans. use any synthetic 75/90 gear oil for the rear.

I think the trans holds between 4 and 5 quarts.
