so with Johnny8's thread getting pretty big with tranny probe questions I decided to start a new one on where is the most ideal place to mount the probe.
Mine is the the line going to the cooler, I have seen post of people putting it in the plug on the drivers side, some in the pan, and a few had it in the return line from the cooler.
who has there's where, and why??? cuz I only put mine where it is for easy of converience, what location would be the most accurate???

Hmm. Well, I just got my gauges and am planning to put the probe in the plug in the side of the trans. As for which is most accurate, I would think one that is measuring the oil temp in the trans, or in the line coming out of the trans would be quite accurate, even if a bit different.
The one place I would NEVER put it is in the oil return line from the cooler. At that location, you don't know the trans temp, you only know the cooled oil temp. If you wait to respond to elevated trans temp until the cooled oil temp exceeds 200 degrees it may already be too late because the trans is a LOT hotter than that.
Despite this, people put the temp probe in the oil return line...
Actually more like putting your pyro in the exhaust tip.
I put mine in the test port. Instructions told me to. I figured the people at autometer, isspro, vdo, etc know much more than I do, so I'll follow their advice.
Question !!!
A while back I remember reading a thread about transmission probes being too long and being broken off inside the tranny... It was a certain gauge mfg or something like that.. Does anyone remember this or what gauge it was ??

probably a mechanical trans temp prob. Those mechanical temp sendors are huge compared to a electrical.
I never got any instructions with my Isspro's so I just T'd it into the tranny cooler line. I normaly see 140*-160*, 190*-205* If I sit in traffic with my foot on the brake.
what kind of temps are people seeing in the test port??? I think I will move it once the truck is up and running again.
i see on average about 70-75 deg over ambient, non-towing & contsant driving. towing i see on average 80-90 degrees over ambient (7k-11k lbs trailer weight). Isspro sender in test port. 4r100 must have some kind of thermostat. I have been noticing that it heats up 130 pretty quick, then very slow after that.
early 99 with stock cooler & trans with 160k on the trans.
