Turbo Fart, it is the excess boost going back through the turbo when you suddenly let off the throttle. As far as being normal both my trucks did and do this, but some say it is not nomal and could be turbo trouble I have not had any problems with anything.
Turbo Fart huh....sounds like the cracked header I had on one of my cars in the '80's! Like I said it didnt do that until about 10 or 15k miles? I dont like it. Anything I should say or ask the dealer?
Flutter Noise on Deceleration:
Some 03-06 trucks may exhibit a fluttering noise from the air filter assembly on deceleration. This is a characteristic of the engine and poses no problems with the engine or turbo. No repair should be attempted. Broadcast Messages 1046, 4818 This condition should be intermittent and typically occurs when the accelerator is quickly released after a hard acceleration. If the flutter occurs at every deceleration, under load or at upshift on acceleration, suspect a sticking VGTurbo actuator or turbo vane ring.
If you don't drive the truck too often and/or don't tow with it and give the turbo actuator ring and variable vanes a workout, one or both can get sticky. The turbo vanes can also get a thin rust coating which can also make them stick either wide open (overboosting) or stick shut (no boost).
A Certified 6.0 Technician can check it out and either clean the turbo or replace it if need be. I would have them check it out, especially if it's still under warranty!

Not to hijack the post..
Hmm, I knew that the hard acceleration and letting off the throttle would cause the turbo fart. However lately my truck has been doing it more and more. Slight acceleration, 5lbs of boost it will fart if i let off. Im starting to worry that it could be the turbo, 60k. Without taking it into the shop until I know for sure what the issue if any there is, What can I do to diag the issue?
The turbo fart thing is true, my '03 did it and so does my '06. It is very noticable if you blip the throttle hard and let off quick or if you accellerate the truck fast and let off the throttle quickly. You can ask them to check it for you but they will probably tell you it is normal and even if they do attempt a repair, it will come back. I see you have an '05, so you should have a boost guage, which is probably the most reliable guage in the truck. If you are overboosting it should show up there.
....normally only when cold, you hit the gas, and then lay off real quick, and you get a exhaust type baffle sound for a second or two?
almost like excess pressure bustin out of an exhaust leak???
I didnt always happen, so I told my dealer, and they said it was normal? Just would like to know from one of the techies heres.
Thanks
No dude it's normal i have an 06 with 23,000 on it and it's done it from day one. If it does it coming off boost always i'd say you have an issue and as kepler's post indicates you maybe having trouble with Vanes otherwise run it
I have a 2003 Excursion, 6.0 and have had the turbo noise twice. The first time was at 45,000 miles and the turbo was replaced. No noise again until currently and I am now have approximately 85,000 miles. I had another new turbo put on it and am still getting the noise but, not consistently. I have another service at the Ford scheduled to look at it again. (Strange it takes over a week to get it in every time I need some service.) I talked to the Ford mechanic who put the newest turbo on and was told that the noise was due to a malfunctioning turbo. The turbo malfunction was due to the exhaust blades getting corroded by the exhaust gases passing over them all the time.
He said that some times the blades could be cleaned but, many times the turbo had to be replaced. If I remember properly the old turbo was to be rebuilt.
My excursion is used as a family vehicle and to pull a 8,500 lb camper. We pull the camper about 25% of the miles that are put on the vehicle.
I am interested is any one else has heard this about the turbos or if they have heard of anything else that might cause the noise.
BAOK I brought this to the attention of my dealer/mechanic, and was told not to worry about it at all, and that it is normal. Also Ive heard this noise since the day I bought it brand new with 100 miles on it, so its always been there, and still is to this day, when its cold and I let of the gas she baffles for a quick second.
So I wonder why would your mechanic tell you the opposite of what mine did?
Noise on after quick acceleration and release of throttle.
Just last i noticed a oil leak, I had my bed plate gasket replaced on my 06 F-350 at the dealership. Apparently in order to do that they have to lift the engine. After I got it back, I heard a similair noise as described on your post. When I accelerated quickly (to just below 20psi boost) and than let go of the accelerator I heard a 'wooh, wooh, wooh' noise coming from under the hood just infront of the driver. Much like a few surges of air leaking (very noticable). I took back to the dealer, and they said it is a common noise, but decided to replace the EGR valve and update the computer (and I think clean the turbo). It happened to be fairly cold outside about -18 degress C (could this make it worse? or reason why I had never heard it before). I get the truck back this afternoon and hoping that the noise has quit. Apparently there is some bulliten on it. Maybe it is the one posted in this forum. What bothers me most, is it wasn't making the noise before they replaced the bed plate gasket, I thought they may have forgot to hook something back up.
My truck has a AFE cold air intake and 4 inch ss turbo back exhaust.
