I need to replace my rear main seal on my 1967 F100 and looking for a diagram and general instructions. I did one years ago on a chevy. Any suggestions?
It's easier to pull the engine. It can be done in the truck but very difficult since the transmission is connected. Most of the new seals are 2 piece molded rubber seals. And some are 1 piece seals. You don't see the rope seals much any more.
Bookman, Clean the rear of your engine to watch where the oil is coming from. The rear mains can leak on a FE, but usually not. They are a real pain in the butt to change so you want to make darn sure that is what is leaking. Actually either is.
Intake manifolds on the other hand are known for leaking and I think because of installation habits that it leaks in the rear more than the front.
Bill as usual, has supplied the part number. Felpro makes good gasket sets, available most anywhere. Some are just using RTV and no cork. RTV needs to skin over before replacing the manifold to it.
Glen, I hope it's a intake leaking and not the rear main as you asked. The intakes are prone to leaking as every one has hit on. These cast iron intakes weight in the 90# range. So use a cherry picker to handle it or someone to help you. You must set these straight down without distrubing the front and rear seal. Hard to do if your by your self. The bad thing is that you must remove the rockers and pushrods to get the intake off.
