I was in the process of taking the oil pan off of my 352. Have a dizzy rod that looks like it twisted off. Anyway, while I was down there I saw some casting numbers on the block. Grabbed my book and got a little excited. I may be wrong but want to verify before I get too excited.
The truck tag shows its suppose to have a 352 with 172 net HP
The engine looks like each piece has been removed and painted. Block and intake is blue and all the other small pieces were painted red. So I thought it may have been rebuilt by someone. Anyhow it still has a 2V carb.
OK I grabbed a spare distributor and found out that rod is removable so I guess thats what I was seeing down in the hole. Wish I could edit my post now so the whole site doesn't see what a dummy I am, lol. Oh well you live and learn.

Well the C5ae-a block shows as a 390, so it appears that perhaps someone may have swapped in a short block under the standard 65 352cu heads and manifold. Are you currently tearing down the motor? If not, have you checked the stroke travel to see what the internals may reveal?
I have not checked piston travel yet. I will likly take it apart a little. When I thought it was just a 352 I was going to get it started regardless of condition. If its a 390 I will proceed with a little more caution and clean it up a little. Last tag on the rear shows 1989 so it probably needs a good inspection. Did get it to turn freely with the starter.
C8AZ-6049-A .. Cylinder Head ~ 1966/67 ~ Without Valves ~ Use with Thermactor Emission.
C8AZ-6049-M .. Cylinder Head ~ 1965/72 ~ Without Valves ~ Without T/E.
Ford replaced the 1965/67 352 cylinder heads with the 360/390 cylinder heads, which carry the 1968 part numbers.
The only real difference is the smog manifold holes used in 1966/67, and they can be plugged with: 8-C6AZ-6052-A.
1965/72 352/360/390's as used in F100/350's all use the same 2V intake manifold. Ford didn't offer an optional 4V carb on F100/350 390 engines till 1973.
