Put in a quart of Marvel Mystery oil, (take a quart out first) then drive it for 100 mi. or so, then change your oil.

my freshly rebuilt 390 had a similar sound, then it went clack clack clack. i had the same symptoms, found out it was my rocker shaft assy, it was cracked and finally it went wild inside the valve cover. mine was cracked for a long time and it finally broke off. since then i replaced both rocker shaft assy. only cost me $200.00

just my 2 cents.

thanks

i'm going to look if the ignition is set right.
if that is the case and it still knocks then i wil pull the valvecover.
i have a set of pushrods valvesprings and rocker shaftassembly new so that could be fixed.
if that isn't the case i will look at the main bearings...

Hey ford5t6;

Howdy all.
Been a while and normally I just read and learn, but I couldn't resist making a suggestion before you get too crazy and begin tearing things apart

I believe that engine and trans combination had a real problem with throwout bearings and when they are going bad can sound ZACTLY like engine bearings.

Just a thought but worth while to eliminate before you spend serious money on things you may not need (yet).

UncleFudd, good to hear from ya now and then you should pop up your head up more often.
When the enginges knocking ground each plug lead at a time to see if you can locate the cylinder, also poke around with a mechanics stethoscope.

If you determine that your problem is ignition, a nice smooth advance curve will help.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:
