hello
i have a '66 ford f100 packed with a 352 cui and three on the tree.
it sat for 1½ year but started right up.
when driving i hear a rattle (knock) in the engine.
when accelarating i don't hear it (but it could be there)
i hear it only when you drive a constant speed.
do you guy's know what this is?
is it a pushrod stuck?
Based on the sat for 1.5 years, I'll guess the sediment on the lifters, cam, rockers, valves etc... has turned to a nasty glue and causing some binding. Stuck lifter is a likely cause..but I cant hear it so ?? (Wrist pin, rod, stuck valve, etc...) I'd probabl start with remove the valve covers and watch the pushrods.. are they all rotating? any have an inconsistant return ? You tell us what you see, we'll help you find the define cancer!! For what its worth, setting that long might be worth removing cleaning lifters. keep them and everything else in order of origination if you do this. One simple slip up on lifter address and ewhhh cause it's really 2 and double ewhhh!!
I have motors sitting for over 10 years, pre-oil and fire right up without lifter problems. They had an oil change before storage with fogger in the cylinders.
My new to me 390 makes a similar noise, but if I unhook the vacuum advance it goes away. I have tried retarding the timing, but it becomes hard to start. I may have a distributor built for it after I install headers and a 4bbl.
LMAO! Don't drive any futher than you care to walk home. Interesting observation all the same.
My wild guess is the fuel pump: The follower spring went kaput letting the pump arm slap the cam. Second wild guess would be an exhaust leak he can't hear over the engine.
Time to play detective and gather more information.
Zactly! It's like saying "I have an oil spot under my car, where is it coming from?" You can't even say it's from that particular car with that information.
I don't mean to be harsh. I apologize in advance if I come off that way. Many of these threads have less to do with the problem and more to do with diagnosing it.
Scott, you asked the question, and yes, I do have a few cars like that.
5t6, get the truck warm, pop the hood and see if you can reproduce the sound in the driveway. If it does it only under load we have a clue. I'm sorta guessing you will be able to hear it in the driveway and be able to determine a location for the sound.
engine was rebuild in '04 and aproxamatly 10000 mls.
drove the truck for about 2 hours but the noise stays.
the noise is heard when driving at a constant speed not when accelarating or breaking
it is comming from the left side of the engine (when sitting in the truck)
the truck drives very very strong does not smoke...........
hope to hear from you.
