What do u all think about the oldsmobile 443 gto. My step dad said he might be bringing one home pretty soon. Are these things fast? any thing i should know about them except that there not a ford.
4-4-2 refered to 4 barrel, 4 speed, dual exhaust. The engines were of varying CID. Check out the following web site for more info. It's very informative.

I've seen 442's with an automatic tranny, wouldn't that be a 42, or do you still get a 4 for a 4-speed auto? Some of the body styles did look good, and you really can't go wrong with a classic muscle car. Not everyone can have a Boss 429 or Stingray 427. That's why they built the lesser muscle cars.
I have a 1972 442. It has an auto trans(Hurst Dual Gate) and a 455 and hauls butt! There were very few cars built in 1972 that can touch my car. It will still turn mid 13's in a quarter mile, not bad for a 4500 pound car.:P
It's all a matter of what engine it has. I worked on one in school, an 89 with about 14k on it, with a 305, quadrapuke, 700R4, and fake duals. Why not just build a Cutlass with a 396 or 454, and have a sleeper? Oops, I forgot- I'm in Ford teritory.
These cars did come standard with 4-on-the-floor, 4-barrel carb, and dual exhaust. That's where the name came from. The automatic was an option. If you're getting one of the "W" models, then you're getting something really special and rare. There were W29, W30, and W31. They had FACTORY blueprinted engines and some incredible performance equipment. 442's were among the very best cars GM ever built, and in general, were not driven as hard as a Malibu SS or a GTO- their drivers tended to be a little more "mature." If it's in nice shape, you're gonna be the envy of your neighborhood- even in Ford Country!! Enjoy!
Also, when dealing with any antuiqe or muscle car, if it matters to you, make sure it is "correct"
My 71 W30 442 came factory with the red front inner fender wells, along with some other things not found on a regular cutlass. The point is they are some what easy to fake, just be sure you get what you think your paying for.
The 442 originally stood for 4-speed, 4-barrel , dual exhaust. Later and I don't remember what year it was changed to 400cid, 4-barrel, dual exhaust. Hope this clears some of the confusion.

the lady across the street has an old olds convertable, with the 442 hood(it's not a 442 car, said she got the hood from a junk yard) it's one sweet looking car though...
I only dreamed of having a 442, but I have had two early 70's Cutlass' though. One was a 72 two door hdtp, and the other was a 71 triple black convertible. Black paint, black interior, black top. Man what a sharp car that was. Miss it every day almost. Neither one was a slouch with a 350 4 barrel, I can imagine how fast the 442's were. A friend of mine had a ragged out looking Cutlass S (fast back) with a 455 two barrel. That car was amazing to drive, felt like being launched out of a slingshot when you floored it. From a stop it was impossible to get traction even with 15x10's and BIG 60's. Sorry for going down memory lane, but I miss those days.,,,,98
1964 2,999 made. 330 cid 310 hp 4 barrel cop motor. 4 speeds only. Available on any mid size car, meaning cutlasses, F-85s and four doors. Hence the 4 speed, 4 barrel, dual exhaust.
1965. Still available on cutlasses and f-85s but two doors only. Autos now an option on new 400 cid V-8. Now it ment 400 cubes, 4 barrel, dual exhaust.
1966. Still same models but with W30 added. Along with the L69 option, W30s had 3 deuces and ram air. So the L69 was a 4-6-2.
1967. No 3 deuces anymore at GM except for the vette. W30 stayed but, along with the 442 option, only came on Cutlasses. A lopo two barrel could be had, so that was a 4-2-2. GTOs could be had with 2 barrels in 67 too.
1968. New body, and new 400. And Hurst/Olds came out with its 455 monster.
1969. Same but automatic W32s came out.
1970. 455! W30s had the HO 455 motor the hursts had.
1971 Same
1972 Strike year so production numbers slipped. 350s optional now.
