I was wondering if anyone here has converted their front ends to a solid front axle? i was thinking about doing this to my truck to get some good lift but not spend big bucks to do it. I have ample supplies of sfa's from just about every make and model, and was wondering what any of you have used? I would probably be switching to a leaf sprung suspension and setting it up similar to the SD's front end, haven't researched it to the nth detail though. Just looking for some support, thanks!
I have been researching this for quite some time myself. I plan on using the D60/10.50 out of a SD, with 6-8" of lift and 42" tires. Here's a thread from Pirate4x4 on it with some pictures:
thanks for the links atc! i'm not really looking to get quite as wicked as the truck in the links, but i'm sure once i start into it it will end up that way! I get a little overboard on my project intentions lol. i don't know if i want to use 3/4 ton axles on it, it's my daily driver after all. I was thinking maybe a Dana 44 front and 60 rear off an older Ford or chevy possibly?
A wrecked superduty should be easy enough to find, and rob parts off of...
You really only need the front axle, as your 10.25 is plenty tough for just about anything (it was a F250 rear axle for years).
The 5.4s come with the 9.75, not the 10.25. If you get the front axle out of a superduty you will also need the rear axle as well. The f-150s use a 5x135mm lug pattern and the superdutys use a 8x?.
You would probably be better off getting axles out of a superduty near your year, if you go with old axles you cant hook the ABS stuff up and the light will stay on.
The Super Duty axles are 8X170mm. I was just contemplating the old axles myself, bobby, and yes i should use the newer ones as i want the disc brake rears, as i noticed the flex f150 had older axles with tiny drum brakes. However, to get use out of the ABS i would also have to switch over the entire brake system from the booster down to utilize the abs on 3/4 ton axles. I wonder if i could use a dana 44 off a older ford or chevy (dodge's pumpkins were on the wrong side i believe?) and maybe find some way to southern-engineer wheel speed sensors into them to make the abs work? I don't really need ABS anyhow because i know how to drive, so i could just take the abs lightbulb out and pull the fuse.
Actually, if you use the 10.25 axle, it will bolt right up to your stock leaf springs (the spring perch is the same distance), and the VSS for the ABS will plug right in. But really...who needs ABS?
