i get some black smoke coming out of the exhaust when its in park and i stick my head out the window and watch it and rev it a few times, mostly when it hits around 3 grand. my guess is its running rich but i've adjusted the heck out of my carb and timing many times, with not much luck. shes a real strong motor, great compression and whatnot and i have fresh timing gears and chain, hei distributor, headers, edelbrock package (carb, cam, intake)
How do the plugs look? That sounds about like when the secondaries pop open, if you have one of those "air valve" Edelbrocks, they tend to do that a little. The valve restricts airflow through the secondaries to prevent a stumble when they open.
Does it stumble when taking off? And how much did you need to adj the idle screws? Is it a 2V or 4V carb? Most 360's were 2V. Is the air horn opening up? Your float level may be high causing it to dump fuel. Or bad power valve.
You said this was doing it before you replace the carb. Has the gas mileage been the same? If someone else revs the engine does the exhaust smells rich?
Has it been using any oil, being a new engine? This would be more blueish tint. During high manifold vacuum conditions, you can draw small amounts of oil from around valve guides, and intake.
i havent calculated my new gas mileage yet.
the exhaust doesnt smell rich, it doesnt run rich either.
just makes some smoke at high rpms and gets on the side of my garage.
this doesnt happen while cruising on the highway at high rpms.
i am thinking this issue is not really a big deal, i've seen it with bikes many times,
and it doesnt bother me much, i'm just trying to figure out whats going on here.
the engine isnt new by any means, its 40 years old, but just in good shape, no she doesnt burn any oil. compression test and leakdown test passed with flying colors, and i have a new pcv valve so i doubt its from any of the crankcase gases. maybe the valves are just a tad bit out of wack from its age?
If you were using oil, I would suggest that you may be getting too much oil on top from the rockers. In turn flooding the valve guides and sucking a little oil. Going down the road I dought you would see any change. Other wise I have no other suggestions.
i have determined my fuel mixture is way too rich. my idle mixture is perfectly dialed in, although that has no control over the jets during all other throttle positions, so i think i am going to invest in a calibration kit with some different metering rods, springs, and smaller jets. also i turned up my accelerator pump and i am going to put that back to where it was. they are great carburetors, but right out of the box they cant possibly be dead on ***** accurate.
