I am installing a new edelbrock performer on my 78 351m. After I have installed the intake, I noticed that there are the tops of some ports on the head exposed... The exposed ports one on each side are right in the middle of the head.. close to the small bolts that hold the intake on. My instinct tells me this is not correct and will not function right. Can anybody give me some advice, I need a little help.
Is it the EGR manifold or non EGR? The non EGR manifold has one 1/2" NPT hole in the manifold...
It sounds like you have the EGR manifold, and you will need to get some plugs for those holes, or install the EGR plated from underneath the original carburetor.
Something doesn't sound right here. Could you take a picture of what you are talking about and post it? You say the ports that are exposed are on the heads. Not the manifold, if so they could not be the EGR ports as they are in the manifold.
I'm thinking they may have sent you the wrong Intake manifold or maybe you do not have a 351M engine. I've read here that the 351 was never put in these trucks from the factory, but a lot of people have transplanted them into their trucks over the years.
A couple months back someone had the same question and I think had pics. My stock 400 has the same holes exposed.dont know what there for. I noticed them when changing valve cover gaskets last week, and stuck a wire tie in one and only went about 3/4".

I am not able to post pics or attachments... but I put a pic in my profile album, it is the only pic in there so.... just the top of the port is exposed...
Thankyou for your help.
i did the same thing on my 77 f-250 a while back and as strange as it looks, it is installed correctly. mine looked the same when i was done. you used the edelbrock gaskets that probably came with the intake (separate gaskets for each head to intake mating surface) instead of the traditional one piece "turkey pan" type of intake gasket. the one piece gaskets may cover the holes, which are used for egr or the exhaust crossover in the intake. try searching for threads on this in the 335 series forum (351c, 351m, 400), lots of useful info there.
