I have an 88 with the 302 and my poor truck has a dead cylinder. The number eight cylinder has some type of problem. After pulling the valve cover for that bank and seeing that the pushrods and rocker arms were working I decided to pull off the head to see if I could find the problem. The next step was to remove the throttle body and upper intake manifold. The throttle body was pretty dirty which is secondary right now. My problem now is that after removing the upper manifold I found that its broken. The mounting point on the front passenger side broke and exposes the port closest to the front of the engine. My questions are does the build up in the intake and the throttle body say something? Secondly can the intake be repaired and if not should I go with a junker? Lastly, and proably least important is can I paint these pieces; intake, throttle body, valve covers and mounting brackets and with what type of paint. Thanks I hope you guys can help me.
I am not sure if you can repair the upper manifold. You can take it to a welding shop and see, it might be cheaper to go to a pick-and-pull yard to get another one. As far as the build up it could be that you have alot of blow by getting into the system. Check your PCV valve and the breather tube from the oil filler cap. I painted my engine after the rebuild with VHT brand paint I used their aluminum paint for the manifold, ford blue for the engine and semi-gloss black for brackets and what nots. Look at my gallery section and then look at the picture of my engine to see how well the paint turned out. One tip on painting the engine parts is make sure the are very clean of any oil and grease, also put the paint on in many small thin coats to get the best results.
