Ford says the entire EGR system should be cleaned and inspected every 15000 miles or 15 months, whichever comes first.
They can probably last longer than 2 years no problem, but that's not to say they always will. If you replace it again, make sure you use a Motorcraft part.
Umm, the one on my '92 is the same one that was on the truck when I bought it in November 1992. My guess is, at least 15 years. The ONLY sensor I've replaced was a MAP sensor, and even the original still works. I was chasing problems by throwing parts at mine because that's all I had time to do. I finally got smart and bought some instruments to help me work smart, not work hard.
As for cleaning the EGR every 15K? Umm, 154K and counting. NEVER been cleaned.

This is sort of an on topic question.. does the egr get it's gases from the thermactor system? If I remove and plug the thermactor system do I have to block off the egr?
