What is it that actually fails in these electric shift Transfer cases? I'm looking at an 02 with about 55k on it, and It has the electric shift case, and over the years I have heard that these fail.
Thanks
Rich
From what I've heard the shift motor siezes up from lack of use - engage it every now and then and/or lube the linkage. I have the mechanical though so I cant say from any personal expirience.
That is what I heard also, "excercise" it every 30 days or so. Its a really good priceon thr truck, and thats really the only thing in question.
Thanks for your input
Rich
DON'T DO IT!
I would never encourage anyone to buy a E.S.O.F.
Ford got a big fat zero from me on that one. I had to replace 5 of the tcase and still no good.
Ended up going to an aftermarket ATLAS 3 manual shift and it's bullet proof. Had to make it fit but it's worth it.
Those ford tcases are CHAIN driven.....the chain get loose (I believe) and then things start flying apart.
Atlas is all gear driven. It is now my strongest link in the system.
GET A MANUAL SHIFT.
Ok, now that everyone is done whining. What actually goes is the Electric Shift Motor that is mounted on the rear of the x-case. The contact plates inside rust up, causing the module to not recieve a position signal(module doesn't know if it's in 2h, 4h, or 4l) so as a safety precausion it doesn't allow shifting into/out of 4x4. Get the GEM scanned for codes, and you should get a transfer case motor circuit failure(forget the exact code, think it's like an P1867 maybe?) I have seen on a couple of the explorers the internal clutches bind up and go bad, but nothing that i can remember on the f-150's.
well i have the ESOF in mine and i have not one complaint about it. ive got about 80k miles on mine and works fine.
Same with me I have ESOF and it's engaged everytime I needed it. I have over 209k miles on mine with no porblems. I really should have the flud changed. Just haven't gotten around to do it yet.
