87 Ranger 2.9 Valve Spring Compressing

87 Ranger 2.9 Valve Spring Compressing
Before winter sets in i'm doing all the dirty work on this vehicle.The manual calls for a special tool to compress the valve springs (so I can change the stem seals).Does anyone know if the spring compressor that the parts store loans out will do the job,or if all else fails can I use the two screw drivers trick to push the spring down and get the retainers out?Thanks
