need help removing valve springs

I bought a hook type spring compressor to take out some valves but I don't know what to do when the spring is compressed. I don't have a single retaining plate and I can't get the locks out. I am not sure what i am supposed to do. I looked at steve christ book and the head had a 1 piece retainer and i don't. Anybodyknow what i need to do or what I have?

What kind of compressor are you using? Does it slide into the top and bottom of the spring (very bad design) or does it look kind of like a c-clamp that squeezes the top of the spring and the bottom of the head?

its the el cheapo that hooks into the top and bottom of the spring. I am using a c clamp to hold the valve.

Compress the spring and retainer together and then give the valve face a soft tap with a rubber mallet or wood dowel. This should bring the lock up and out of the retainer. The locks should easily come off after that.

Are the heads off? What I do is take a deep 1/2" drive socket which will match up to the inner retainer, and hit it a few times with a hammer..not real hard but they do wedge in there. Then when you comp the spring, you might have to take a straight punch and tap the retainer loose. It also helps to have a small magnet handy for the keepers.

OK ford let me see if I have this right? the bottom of the compressor goes to the valve face...and the top compresses the spring..it pushes down on the retainer right?

after you compress the retainer and sping together at the top of the valve stem you will see the retaining clips..tap on them..there in 2 halfs the should fall off.. remove them..and then slowly let the tension off the compressor..I have seen springs take off

Like rockets.. Hope this helped? Russ

Thats what my budy Tom monroe called them. I used a 3/8 drive 9/16 socket and got it out. And as someone said i used a magnet. I hate the stupid compressor and I plan on going to town tomorrow to get the better clamp style one. I wanted that one from the start but cheaped out on one from carquest. The one I got is a complete pain in the ***.
Thanks guys!!!

I used to use a large 1/2 inch drive socket to get the valve springs off. I set the socket centered on top of the spring retainer, whacked it with a heavy peen, and that compresses the spring. The split retainers fall off and the valve is free!

Of course you'll still need a spring compressor tool to put them back on.
