peeling clearcoat

My neighbors clearcoat is peeling really bad on his car. The paint is fading where it is coming off. He wants to redo the clear on it. Is there anything we can do to the paint to bring the color back a little bit before he puts on new clear?

Once the clearcoat goes away, there's not much you can do with the base coat.

One cause of peeling clearcoat is ppl use a wax with silicone in it.

Prior to the advent of 2 stage paint, most car waxes contained silicone, and those waxes are still sold today.

Silicone will strip the clearcoat right off.

Read the label before buying any wax.

I guess what I am trying to ask is, can he sand the paint with a really high grit sandpaper to bring the color back? He wants to do the clear again. When he bought the car the clear was bad, he just wants to make it shine. He just wants to do a temp fix till he can afford to paint the car.

Lightly color sand the base coat and rub it out. I've done this by hand, as a buffer will take off too much paint. The shine won't mimic the clearcoat, but it's better than nothing.

you'll should take down to at least primer to be safe and rebase and clear if you want to repaint it. The base has being exposed to environment and uv and think you could have a real risk of clear delimination spraying over old base without a sound clearcoat being on top. Plus if its metallic or pearl, if you sand the color it will disturb the metallic and will be able to see where you sanded, blotchy uneven look just clearing over with no more color shot on top. You best bet would be new base with clear applied within time window for proper chemical adhesion. If you have sound clear, you probably wouldn't have to rebase those areas and could just clear over, but if its delaminating in several areas, how safe do you really feel about other areas?
