Clearcoat on wheels

the wheals on my truck are looking very ragady, the clear coat seems to be peeling off and turning colors, wondering if anyone knew how to take the clear coat completely off and how to polish the alloy wheels so they shine very nicely

Clearcoat on wheels

I haven't tried this personally, but a friend of mine had the problem and he stripped it all off with some solvent and resprayed with clear coat. Of course you need to remove the tires and make sure everything is absolutely clean etc.

I have also had clear coat peel off and it is a mess. I usually clean the wheel real well and give it a good coat of wax. The clearcoat is still peeled but doesn't look as bad.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

If you are going to use chemicals to strip clearcoat from any kind of alloy test it on the back of the wheel where you can't see it first - a lot of things react with alloy wheels and either corrode them or turn them funky colors...

well tried stripping it with the chemicals and it did so-so, some places though the clear coat just want come off, i thought of maybe sanding it off, u think that would hurt anything

Since whatever chemicals you used didn't mess up the wheels, instead of sanding all the clear off and ruining the polish on the wheels, I'd try sanding the clear-coated areas just enough to break the surface coat and see if the chemicals can attack it then...

Clearcoat on wheels

Hey guys! I was wondering.... Since they are Alloy, he should be able to have them "Bead" blasted (no damage with beads), and then have them re-polished, and then powder-coated clear! Yes?
No? I had mine bead blasted, but liked the satin look and now I just give them a once over with steel wool. I stopped using polish. It seemed to make them a dirt magnet.
Talk with you guys later....

Paint stripper should take off the clear coat. Years ago wheels didn't have a coating. You just polished them once in awhile, or not.

i wish it was the same way now, the clear coat over years gets dull, but most of it changed colors when the calipers hung and got the wheels extremely hot

A hot water pressure washer removes the clear coat effortlessly. It peels the clear coat up nicely and leaves the wheel with a very nice shine.

Gonna need more pressure than a car wash. And it should be a hot water pressure washer.

i would not try that spray can stuff, personal opinion, it dulls the finish and overtime changes to a yellowish color
