tranny temps

I have an autometer trans temp gauge in my 99 SD. The thing never moves! Does anybody know how to diagnose these things-gauge,maybe sending unit? What does the sending unit send to the gauge so I can check it.

It's the design, every Super Duty works this way. The factory meter and sender doesn't move until it's too late to do anything. In other words, if the trans temp gauge moves up your transmission is already too hot.

If you want to rectify this, install an aftermarket sender with your temp meter.

I don't think there is a factory trans gauge on the 99'. Where is your sending unit hooked up at on the trans?

I think it is aftermarket and it is on a little rubber hose in front of the intercooler then it goes to the meter in the three pillar pod on the (A-pillar)?

In cold weather, the gauge may never move unless you are stressing the Torque converter. The temps will stay low.

Testing:

You can ground the wire from the sending unit, and the gauge should get all way up.

I put a set of Auto meter gauges in my 99.5 ford. The trans temp gauge I had came with a sending unit that screwed into the pass side of the transmission on the most forward port. It worked great for me. I'd check to see what kind of sending unit you have and where it's connected.

It is an Autometer. The sending unit is in front of the intercooler behind the grill hooked up to two rubber lines.

That means the gauge is good, and possibly your sensor is what is bad. Pull the sensor out and see if it is damaged.

Smile tranny temp

I found out that the sender wasn't grounded! The gauge lights are grounded to the gauge ground also so when I turn the lights on the gauge goes directly to no reading ,way below 100 deg.

Thanks for all the help!

I'd recommend relocating the sending unit to the pressure port on the drivers side of the tranny. The idea of having a tranny temp gauge is to get a reading of the fluid in the tranny, not on the return line. Sounds like the way yours is set up right now is getting a reading next to the tranny cooler which kind of defeats the purpose. You want to be able to monitor the fluid temp inside the tranny so the perfect place for the sending unit is the one I mentioned above.

You can go to my gallery and look in the tech photos to see where I installed the sending unit for my Autometer guage in my 4R100 trans.

How do I know which is the pressure port or is there only one on the driver side?

There's only one port. It's on the driver's side, just above the pan, towards the front of the trans. There is a black hex head plug in the port.

Depending if you have a 7.3L or 6.0L they are both on the driver side above the pan. The 7.3L is hidden above the shift mechanism, while on the 6.0L its closer to the front of the tranny.

This may help:
