Last year I got a 77 f250 camper special with auto trans with 60 K original miles, just before I bought it the truck got a rebuilt trans. I see the very small trans cooler up front that looks like original equipment.
My question is does anyone know what is a good fit for a larger cooler?? what brand and model that fits into our trucks easily???, without being a pain. I am looking for the largest that will easily fit. So if anyone has figured this out already I would appreciate the info.
I just tore up my 97 F350 diesel trans that cost me $4800 today to get a beefed up one, so I want to prevent this on my 77 f250
B&M makes some nice cross flow coolers that are very efficient. Also if you do not have A.C. in your truck, you can mount a factory A.C. condenser in front of the radiator and plumb your trany lines through that. You can find one pretty cheap at the junk yard and they are very efficient, plus they use the factory mounting points for a very easy install.
Thanks for the help. The truck did have factory A/C when I got it and I did take out all of it and threw away the condensor, I did not think about using it to cool the trans.
the AC condenser will work ok, but I would use a true transmission cooler with larger tubing, and less likely to reduce flow. The coolers from the super duties are huge, and work awesome.
I used a cooler from Summit Racing. Part # SUM-G4969. It's 10 1/2" x 21" x 1 1/2" thick. It's a pretty good size cooler for around $80.00 and very easy to install. It sure helps when the weather is hot. I also installed a B&M remote oil filter in line with the cooler. Part # BMM-80277.
I get mine at the U pull it
here they charge 10.00 each
the factory coolers come in many sizes
and most are the stacked plate type with
factory mounting tabs and factory bent lines
