well today when i was driving my 1997 f150 4x4 on the highway...i noticed a bery bad vibrating starting at about 90km/h...and if i let off the gas and then on again i hear a "Clunk"....it sounds like it is coming from the front end...but i am not sure.
i bought front and rear u-joints for the rear driveshaft...and was going to put them on tommorow...but now i am scared that maybe thats not the problem?
also on this truck is the front driveshaft always spinning?...like even when not engaged in 4x4?
also when i get under the truck and move the front driveshaft(rotate it) and stop it really fast and back again...it makes a bit of a clunk...so i am wondering if this is where my noise is coming from?
also where my rear shaft goes into the t-case it appears maybe a little of some liquid as seeped out and it spattered onto the bottom of the body by the rotating force of the shaft....is this normal?...or should that seal just have grease on it?
not saying its not the drive shaft, but normally drive shaft u-joint problems are noticable at 10 MPH, far befor 60-70 MPH. high speed vibrations are normally tire related, but not always.--- some minor weepage of fluid is normall at the drive shaft to transmission seal on an older truck, the less leakage the better. if you have a seal or bearing problem there would be oil all over everything,
well i got under there and changed the rear u-joint...never got the front changed becuase APP gave me the wrong one...it appears both u joints on the shaft are the same..and they gave me 2 different ones.
but the vibration and clunk are now gone..so that must have been it....the u joint was pretty bad...almost about to fall apart.
thanks for the help guys...i will be dropping the shaft again sometime this week to change the other one once i get the proper ujoint
as for the seal...i have it here...it came in the kit when i did my tcase and transmission...but it was not leaking so i never put it in.
i have to find the proper seal press and i will put it in..hopefully that stops the minor leaking.
