I have a intermittent clunk coming from under the cab.I have a 2002 sc 4x4 7700 lb 5.4 auto.....The truck makes a clunk when the engine loads up leaving a stop sign or intersecton. It sounds like maybe a engine mount .It's not all the time but makes the hair stand on my back when i hear it.It sounds like metal or aluminium snaping .I've checked the driveshaft for worn u-joints ,but everything is tight. My buddy tried looking while I loaded up the engine and he say's the driveshaft jiggles a bit when this snap happens.I can replicate the noise by loading the engine while parked in gear.It has to be loaded quite a bit before it snaps........help.
I think I've heard of this same problem on here before. I think you need to disconnect the driveshaft and lube the slip yoke. Don't remember the details, do a search and you should find it.
If you take the Drive Shaft off to greace the slip yolk, Look into the u-joints anyway. They are cheap to replace and I will bet that is the problem. I had the same noise when accelerating from a stop or going from park to gear. The barings in the u-joints were destroyed. You wont always get obvious driveshaft "play." Until you do so take it easy on the driveline. Allways aply the break when shifting from park to gear or reverce to drive etc. Use Teflon Greace on the slip yolk and use a small amout. Ask the dealership if they can give you a half an ounce of it. That is how I got mine for free. Also, get greaceable U-joints.
Ya I wish that link worked...it's got me wondering.I checked the u-joints again ....they seem mighty tight for the amount of noise coming from underneath. From my experience,it's not u-joint related.but you never know I guess.Ranger Russ ,if you can tell me what that link said in so many words it would be appreciated...
Sorry about the problem with the link. I copied it out of a "link". the link works.
do a search for " Will that common driveshaft problem destroy anything?". Follow the thread down to one of the replies from Rockledge and click on "Driveshaft Lube". I just tried it and it works.
