Thanks in advance for your help. I have 89 BII Automatic tranny, manual locking hubs. Lately it has been making a clunk when I put it in gear. I had someone put it in gear as I watched underneath, and it looked as though the clunking was coming from the rear drive shaft where it meets the flange of the transfer case. This morning, I accelerated on my way to work, heard a "clunk", and had no power to the wheels.
I coasted in to the grocery store lot. I removed the rear drive shaft after feeling how loose it was mostly in the back (axle side) but also in front. The rear CV boot in the drive shaft is broken and leaking a little, and the shaft itself is very flimsy in the boots (not sure if that's normal.) I decided to lock the hubs, go in to 4 x 4 and drive it home (only 1 block away), however, It won't go in to 4 wheel drive and I can't go anywhere. My question is: Is this a transfer case problem, or is it possible that I need to do something specific (move a couple feet, etc.) in order to get the front drive shaft moving??? T
The only other detail, not sure if it matters, is that if I try to turn the front driveshaft (it won't turn obviously, only move), the flange that the rear shaft bolts on to moves a little with it. Please help. I need to rule out tranny problems before I get a new rear shaft, etc., but realize that something is wrong if the front shaft won't rotate. Have to decide whether to scrap this vehicle or what....Please help!!
Update..front shaft rotates freely unless, of course, hubs are locked. The rear flange has moved at least a quarter of a turn while I'm been messing around, but vehicle still won't travel anywhere.....
Manual shift or electric shift t-case? It sounds like the hubs are working, but I don't know if you've been able to verify if the t-case is locking or not.
In 2H, will the rear output on the t-case spin? In 4H? If it spins in 4H, does the front shaft spin with the rear?

Manual shift.
Hubs are working. IN 2h, nothing spins and same with 4h. In fact front won't spin either unless hubs are unlocked and I turn it manually. In other words, the transfer case seems to be locked up or whatever. I'm pretty sure it's the transfer case. I'm truck shopping this weekend. I hate to kill this Bronco though.
Considering that the transmission is usually quite a bit weaker than the t-case on these, I'd probably suspect a transmission problem before a t-case problem.
