I am going to be replacing the ignition sytem on my 89 I6 and have considered these two brands. A friend of mine put a DUI in 400 and he said it did wonders for his trucks power and fuel effciency. I have also heard alot of people here talk about MSD. Has any one had any experience with either of these or knows some good facts as to why one is better than the other. Thanks for your comments.
I tried to post once, so if this comes up double, it's not my fault. I have DUI on my truck, and it was the best investment I made. It improved cold starts, cold running operation, highway operation, mileage, got rid of a high rpm misfire, and made the truck seem new again. It was $379 cod'd to my house, and was about a 10 minute install. It is a one wire hookup, I ran a 10 gauge wire from the battery, to a switch in the dash, and to the distributor. The really neat thing is, I am running a .060 plug gap, too!
Not to sound stupid...whats a DUI. I have a rebuilt 240 in my '67 and really want to get some better mileage. Not to mention these Michigan winters are hard-starting.
Hey thanks for the advice, I had a pretty good feeling about DUI but I wanted to be sure. Just curious, what knid of truck and engine did you put it in? Oh and a DUI(Davis Unified Ignition) is the only one piece distributor made for Fords. It doesn't use a ballast resistor creating a hotter spark at about 50,000 volts which allows for larger gaps. Check out http://www.performancedistributors.com/forddui.htm .
I don't think the DUI will work on an 89 because the computer controls spark timing. I got my MSD 6A and TFI coil from Summit for $202. Very easy installation unless you want to hide the wiring. I mounted the box right behind the battery where the AIR inlet was and ran the wires over the engine. Since I'm a lazy bum this kept me from having to lengthen the wiring. MSD offers a special harness to allow easier (???) installation, but I don't see how it could be any easier than it was. You plug two wires from the MSD into the original coil plug, then plug two others into the coil.
I have an 85 F-150 with the 6.....and I have the factory tach. If I were to go with the DUI, would there be any way to use the factory tach? How would I, or would I be better off converting to a Duraspark setup and getting the wiring harness off a similar truck?
You could hook up the DUI in a computer controlled truck, e-mail me and I can tell you how, but Performance Distributors also makes a TFI and Duraspark distributors. All of these would be custom-curved to your truck.
You can use the factory tach with the DUI. You just have to run the tach signal wire to the tach output on the side of the dstributor cap.
You could install the DUI in an EFI truck, but without the original distributor the computer is going to freak out. It relies on the PIP signal from the TFI to do it's job, without this signal it won't work right. The engine will run, but not to its potential.
